Retail Options for Maitri Farm
In the past we have received various inquiries from people looking to purchase a thoughtful bouquet for a loved one, a box of delicious veggies, or some local, golden honey. Until now, we would direct these inquiries to either our CSA option or to local retail shops that had some of our products. We are happy to announce that Maitri Farm has re-vamped our website to include a retail page that includes everything Maitri Farm as to offer. Whether you are looking for a box of organic veggies or a fresh bouquet, you can find everything Maitri when you go to https://www.maitriny.com
Check out our New Well!
Well well well, if it isn’t irrigation upgrades! Getting water to the fields is a critical component of daily farm operations. Sunlight, soil, and water are the three main ingredients of a happy plant and our crops would perish if any one of these elements were missing. As you may have noticed, this spring has been particularly dry and with a less a robust watering system, watering our crops has required diligence and quite a bit of time.
Last year we decided that upgrading our well system would be an integral move in order to ensure our produce has the nourishment to grow into the best food possible. We are now nearing the end of the installation process of all the pipes and electric work required to get this well up to speed, and we’re pumped about it! (Pun intended)
Investing in the farm on this scale is time consuming, expensive, and game-changing. We would like to thank our friends over at Keyser Drilling Company for helping us with this endeavor as well as our buddies at Berlinghoff Electric. This project is a big deal for us and a reminder that many hands make (somewhat) light work. We would not have been able to do without various teams of people coordinating and getting it done. Here’s to our moisturized and beautiful future harvests and helpful friends.

Vegetable Update:
We have successfully made it through June, a month busy for getting crops from the greenhouse into the ground. July means the beginning of Tomato season and we will shortly have buckets of tomatoes ranging from Indigo Cherry tomatoes to gorgeous, golden heirlooms. Additionally we are welcoming in shishito peppers, garlic, spigarello, and a variety of herbs such as sage, thyme, and sorrel.
Corn is in the ground and we are happy to report that it was knee high by the Fourth of July! We are hoping for a bountiful yield and we have already begun planting squash that will grow throughout the summer months and be ready for the fall. Farming requires a great deal of patience, planning ahead, and rolling with unexpected circumstances. These things all translate into various avenues of life, and we are grateful for the wisdom that this way of life imparts.
Let’s Talk Aphids
Everything at Maitri Farm is grown to the highest organic standard because we believe in produce that is minimally influenced by chemicals. Our flowers and vegetables are treated with great attention and care, never harmful sprays. However, not using pesticides means that some of our crops are vulnerable to insects that other people would kill using sprays. One common pest we encounter is the Aphid- a small insect that sucks on the sap inside of plants.
Aphids can come in a variety of colors ranging from bright red to black to beige. These critters are quite the nuisance and as an organic farm, we do not have a great amount of protection against them.
For the most part we rely on the natural food chain and have gratitude for the ladybugs present on the farm that love to feast on the aphids.
This is the balance of pros and cons we have to weigh when farming organically. Aphids may affect our crop yields but we prefer to take this chance so that we are able to provide food that has only been touched by water and the sun.
This year, the aphids have been very present due to a combination of factors including the mild winter this past season and drought.
Here are some examples of what aphids look like:
Ask a Farmer:
One of the wonderful things about working on a farm is the knowledge of how to care for the land and the plants that grow here. We believe strongly in sharing this knowledge with you and would like to encourage everyone receiving this newsletter to write in with questions for us. These questions can range anywhere from best practices for planting herbs to fertilization to watering and more. We are going to include questions and answers on a designated segment of our website so that everyone can see what is being asked and the information that might be helpful to them. Please email info@maitriny.com to submit questions to us, don’t be shy! We love hearing from you.
