Goats

Maitri farm is happy to welcome our newest helpers here: say hello to Templeton, Romeo and Drew. Goats have a unique ability to eat just about anything, which makes them great helpers when it comes to removing unwanted plant growth. Here at the farm we are trying to manage an invasive species called Rosa Mulriflora that is indigenous to Asia but has spread effectively throughout the eastern US. The goats happily chomp away at the brush for food and we get to control unwanted plant growth, it’s a win win! The goats come from a company called Green Goats of Rhinebeck who rent out the goats to people like us. If you’d like to see how they can help you, head over to www.green-goats.com

Hives and Honeybees

We are continuing to retool our animal programs and we are happy this year to continue developing our hives of honeybees. Because of our Organic Certification and our proximity to fresh water, our fields are ideal for sustaining beehives. Not only do they play an important role in the farms’ biodiversity plan but they pollinate our orchard and other fruiting crops. Plus, honey. Currently we have eight active and healthy hives, our honey will be available at our farmstand.
